Obama set to send 1,200 troops to US-Mexico border 25 May 2010 President Barack Obama will send 1,200 National Guard troops to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border, an administration official and an Arizona congresswoman said Tuesday, pre-empting Republican plans to try to force votes on such a deployment. Obama will also request $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities, they said. The National Guard troops will work on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support, analysis and training, and support efforts blocking fomenting drug trafficking.

IG report: Meth, porn use by drilling agency staff

IG report: Meth, porn use by drilling agency staff 25 May 2010 Staff members at an agency that oversees offshore drilling accepted tickets to sports events, lunches and other gifts from oil and gas companies and used government computers to view pornography, according to an Interior Department report alleging a culture of cronyism between 'regulators' and the industry. In at least one case, an inspector for the Minerals Management Service admitted using crystal methamphetamine and said he might have been under the influence of the drug the next day at work, according to the report by the acting inspector general of the Interior Department.

North Korea tells military to prepare for war

North Korea tells military to prepare for war --North Korea cuts all ties with the South 25 May 2010 North Korea today hit back at Seoul by announcing it would sever all links, escalating the standoff over accusations that the North sank a South's warship. North Korea's state news agency KCNA also reported that Pyongyang would expel all South Koreans from a joint-industrial zone in Kaesong, near the border. The announcement came as a monitoring group in Seoul reported that the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, last week ordered his military to prepare for war in case the South attacks.

BP will continue live video feed during 'top kill' attempt

BP will continue live video feed during 'top kill' attempt 25 May 2010 BP says it will continue to provide a live video feed of the ruptured pipe gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico during Wednesday's planned top kill procedure to seal the well. Earlier Tuesday, there had been some consternation on Capitol Hill when it wasn't certain BP would maintain the live feed. Democratic Rep. Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts expressed concern Tuesday that BP might terminate the images during the top kill attempt. "It is outrageous that BP would kill the video feed for the top kill," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Massachusetts before BP's announcement to continue the live video.

FBI details surge in death threats against lawmakers

FBI details surge in death threats against lawmakers 25 May 2010 "I voted for you," the caller said in a voice mail to Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler’s district office. "If you vote for that stimulus package, I’m gonna kill you. Simple as that." The FBI says the caller was a 70-year-old resident of Shuler’s North Carolina district with a history of mental illness and a cache of guns... The threat against Shuler is one of several detailed in 2009 FBI documents provided to POLITICO pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act request.

US to expand secret operations

US to expand secret operations 25 May 2010 The United States is planning to expand its secret military operations across the Middle East, central Asia and east Africa, a newly-released report says. The secret activities are apparently designed to "penetrate, disrupt, defeat or destroy" terror cells such as al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh], the New York Times said on Monday, citing a military document. The directive was approved in September by US General David Petraeus.

Inspector General's Inquiry Faults Regulators

Inspector General's Inquiry Faults Regulators --24 May 2010 Federal 'regulators' responsible for oversight of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico allowed industry officials several years ago under Bush to fill in their own inspection reports in pencil -- and then turned them over to the regulators, who traced over them in pen before submitting the reports to the agency, according to an inspector general’s report to be released this week. The report, which describes inappropriate behavior by the staff at the Minerals Management Service from 2005 to 2007, also found that inspectors had accepted meals, tickets to sporting events and gifts from at least one oil company while they were overseeing the industry.

CIA Had Plan to Portray Saddam Hussein as Pedophile

CIA Had Plan to Portray Saddam Hussein as Pedophile [In psychology, they call that *projection.*] 25 May 2010 The CIA had a bag of dirty tricks ready for Saddam Hussein in preparation of the 2003 American invasion of Iraq that included making him look like a pedophile. It also had something similar planned for Osama bin Laden. The Washington Post blog Spy Talk, citing former CIA officials, said one devious tactic involved creating a video showing the Iraqi strongman purportedly having sex with a teenage boy. "It would look like it was taken by a hidden camera," one ex-CIA official told Spy Talk's Jeff Stein. "Very grainy, like it was a secret videotaping of a sex session." The ex-CIA officials said the idea was then to "flood Iraq with the videos."

Seven arrested for Kabul attack on Nato convoy

Seven arrested for Kabul attack on Nato convoy 25 May 2010 Afghan authorities say they have arrested seven people in connection with last week's attack in the capital, Kabul, which killed six Nato soldiers. Four colonels -- three of them American and one Canadian - died in the car bombing which killed 18 people. At least 52 people were injured in the deadliest attack this year on foreign troops in the Afghan capital.

Fliers who make 'pithy comments' may appear on TSA's radar

Fliers who make 'pithy comments' may appear on TSA's radar 25 May 2010 Airline passengers who get frustrated and kick a wall, throw a suitcase or make a pithy comment to a screener could find themselves in a little-known Homeland Security database. The Transportation Security Administration says it is keeping records of people who make its screeners feel threatened as part of an effort to prevent workplace violence [!?!]. Privacy advocates fear the database could feed government watch lists and subject innocent people to extra airport screening.

Oil spill brings 'death in the ocean from top to bottom'

Oil spill brings 'death in the ocean from top to bottom' By Frank Pope 24 May 2010 It has been an hour since our sport-fishing boat started streaking through the freshly oil-soaked marshes of Pass a Loutre, but we’re still only halfway through the slick. Eighteen miles out and the stink of oil is everywhere. Rashes of red-brown sludge are smeared across vast swaths, between them a swell rendered faintly psychedelic with rainbow-coloured swirls. Cutting the engines, we slide to a stop near Rig 313. We’re not supposed to be in the restricted zone [b*** me, BP], but other than the dispersant-spraying aircraft passing overhead there’s no one to see us. Despite the thick oil, we’ve seen only two clean-up boats out of the 1,150 that the response claims to have on site: one was broken down, the other was towing it.

U.S. Orders Expanded Use of Covert Action, Paves Way for Possible Iran Strikes

U.S. Is Said to Order Expanded Use of Covert Action in Middle East --'The precise operations that the directive authorizes are unclear.' 24 May 2010 The top American commander in the Middle East has ordered a broad expansion of clandestine military activity in an effort to disrupt militant groups or counter threats foment terrorism in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and other countries in the region, according to defense officials and military documents. The secret directive, signed in September by Gen. David H. Petraeus, authorizes the sending of American Special Operations troops to both friendly and hostile nations in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa to gather intelligence and build ties with local forces. Officials said the order also permits reconnaissance that could pave the way for possible military strikes in Iran if tensions over its nuclear ambitions escalate.

U.S. agency overseeing oil drilling ignored warnings of risks

U.S. agency overseeing oil drilling ignored warnings of risks 24 May 2010 The federal agency responsible for regulating offshore oil drilling repeatedly ignored warnings from government scientists about environmental risks in its push to approve energy exploration activities quickly, according to numerous documents and interviews. Minerals Management Service officials, who receive cash bonuses for meeting federal deadlines on leasing offshore oil and gas exploration, frequently altered their own documents and bypassed legal requirements aimed at ensuring drilling does not imperil the marine environment, the documents show. This has dramatically weakened the scientific checks on offshore drilling that were established under landmark laws such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the National Environmental Policy Act, according to those who have worked with MMS, which is part of the Interior Department.

'Insurgents' at BP's HQ

'Insurgents' at BP's HQ 24 May 2010 BP-Halliburton has executed a large-scale act of terror on US land and sea. Where are the 'insurgents' when you need them? They obviously should be at BP's HQ until there is no more BP HQ. (Facebook group)

Dolphin in BP-Halliburton oil gusher

Dying, dead marine wildlife paint dark, morbid picture of Gulf Coast following oil spill 02 Jun 2010 Here's what President Obama didn't see when he visited the Gulf Coast: a dead dolphin rotting in the shore weeds. "When we found this dolphin it was filled with oil. Oil was just pouring out of it. It was the saddest darn thing to look at," said a BP contract worker who took the Daily News on a surreptitious tour of the wildlife disaster unfolding in Louisiana. His motive: simple outrage. "There is a lot of coverup for BP. They specifically informed us that they don't want these pictures of the dead animals. They know the ocean will wipe away most of the evidence. It's important to me that people know the truth about what's going on here," the contractor said.

BP Kept Using Toxic Chemical in Gulf After E.P.A. Deadline

BP Kept Using Toxic Chemical in Gulf After E.P.A. Deadline 24 May 2010 The effort to stanch the vast oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was mired by setbacks on Monday as state and federal officials feuded with BP over its failure to meet deadlines and its refusal to stop spraying a chemical dispersant. The oil company had indicated that it could stem the flow of oil on Tuesday by trying a procedure known as a top kill, in which heavy fluid would be pumped into the well. But on Monday morning the company’s chief operating officer said the procedure would be delayed until Wednesday.

US troops in Afghanistan outnumber those in Iraq

US troops in Afghanistan outnumber those in Iraq 24 May 2010 There are more US troops in Afghanistan than Iraq for the first time since Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003, officials say. New Pentagon figures show there are currently around 94,000 troops in Afghanistan compared to 92,000 in Iraq. Up to 50,000 are expected to remain there until the end of 2011 to help train and equip Iraqi forces. [Not to mention, thousands of mercenaries, terrorists, sociopaths, scumbags, druglords and other assorted nutjobs on the Pentagon's payroll. It's an open sewer. --LRP]

Israel favors 'crippling' Iran sanctions

Israel favors 'crippling' Iran sanctions 24 May 2010 Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor says Tel Aviv favors the imposition of more 'crippling' UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program. "I do believe the regime of sanctions may work,…[although] it is not as comprehensive or as crippling as I would want it to be," Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor was quoted as saying by Reuters. [Why aren't sanctions invoked against Israel for *its* nuclear weapons programs?]

Allawi bloc MP killed in Mosul

Allawi bloc MP killed in Mosul 24 May 2010 Unidentified gunmen have killed an Iraqi lawmaker from the parliamentary bloc of former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. "Gunmen set up an ambush for MP Bashar Hamid al-Graydi outside his house in the Amil neighborhood and opened fire when he got home," AFP quoted a police officer as saying.

Arctic oil spill could be disastrous for polar bears: expert

Arctic oil spill could be disastrous for polar bears: expert 23 May 2010 Canada must prepare for an Arctic oil spill catastrophe "long in advance," says a polar bear expert. Edmonton-based biology Prof. Andrew Derocher said an oil well blowout in Canada’s northern Beaufort Sea just before freeze-up could be disastrous to northern animals. When spring returned, a sheen would appear through the cracks in the ice as a dripping polar bear sat by the edge, neurotically licking the oil from its fur, he said. The current spill in the Gulf of Mexico has added a sense of urgency to Derocher’s research.

'Israeli Retaliation Must Include Major Muslim Sites'

'Israeli Retaliation Must Include Major Muslim Sites' 24 May 2010 A new paper from the BESA Center for Mideast Security and Policy says any Israeli response to a non-conventional attack from Arab countries must include an attack on sites of "major symbolic importance for the Muslim world". "If the source of a terrorist nuclear attack against Israel is unknown, or if it is known to originate with al-Qaeda or Iran, Israel should make it clear that its response will be unlimited and include not just major population centers, but all sites of value, including those of major symbolic importance for the Muslim world."

Chicken costumes banned at Nevada polling places

Chicken costumes banned at Nevada polling places 22 May 2010 Nevada voters will not be able to go to the polls wearing a chicken costume this year. State election officials have added chicken suits to the list of banned items after Republican Senate candidate Sue Lowden suggested bartering with doctors for medical care like when "our grandparents would bring a chicken to the doctor." Democrats set up a website, "Chickens for Checkups," and have dispatched volunteers in chicken suits to Lowden's campaign events.

Pakistan detainees proud of role in NYC bomb case 22 May 2010 Two men detained in Pakistan for alleged links to the attempted Times Square bombing [false flag] have admitted playing a role in the botched attack and are unrepentant, with one angrily accusing interrogators of "siding with the infidels," a senior intelligence official said Saturday. The pair are among six men officials say have been detained in Pakistan for alleged ties to Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-American arrested in the United States two days after the failed May 1 attack in New York.

Iran positive detained Americans spies

Iran positive detained Americans spies 23 May 2010 Iranian Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi says Tehran is positive that the three US citizens arrested last July near the Iraq border are spies. Sarah Emily Shourd, Shane Michael Bauer and Joshua Felix Fattal were arrested on Iranian soil after crossing the border from northern Iraq in July 2009. "It is clear that the three Americans are spies," Moslehi told reporters on Sunday adding that "there have been no talks on a swap."

Australia expels Israeli diplomat over Dubai hit

Australia expels Israeli diplomat over Dubai hit 23 May 2010 Australia's government said on Monday it had ordered the expulsion of an Israeli diplomat over the use of fake passports in the assassination of a top Hamas militant in Dubai in January. Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said an investigation had left no doubt that Israeli intelligence services had been behind the forgery of four Australian passports used by suspects in the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room.

'Secret Ops' cause of US deaths in Iraq

'Secret Ops' cause of US deaths in Iraq 23 May 2010 An international anti-war organization, the War and Peace Foundation, says continued fatalities of US troops in Iraq is a sign of their involvement in secret operations. Speaking to Press TV on Saturday, Director of the War and Peace Foundation Kevin Sanders said the fact that the US soldiers are killed off-base in Iraq shows that the US is violating certain restrictions. Under an agreement signed between Washington and Baghdad in 2008, the movement of US troops is limited to their bases and all unilateral operations should have technically come to a halt in 2009.

Farmers hold massive march in Paris

Farmers hold massive march in Paris 23 May 2010 Swarms of French farmers have poured into the most prestigious avenue in Paris, calling for their government to tackle the brewing crisis in the agricultural sector. Champs Elysees, Paris's famous neighborhood was covered with plants, flowers and livestock on Sunday as more than 800,000 farmers, whose industry has been battered by falling prices and climbing production costs in recent years, demanded more financial aid and government support.

Iran seeks Iraq war compensation

Iran seeks Iraq war compensation 23 May 2010 More than twenty years after Iraq launched a full-scale invasion of Iran, a top Iranian lawmaker says Tehran's demands for war compensation should be met. "Iran has a legal right to seek compensation for the damages it endured during the war imposed by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and this matter should be pursued in all seriousness," Kazem Jalali, Rapporteur of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said on Sunday. "The United States is now selling Iraqi oil as reparations for the war it waged on the Middle Eastern country. The Tehran government should also claim compensation," he added.

Stand up to BP and say: 'You know, I’m not taking your s*** any more'

Stand up to BP and say: 'You know, I’m not taking your s*** any more' 22 May 2010 It is 19 years since Erin Brockovich first went into battle against corporate America. She was a small-town single mum who stood up to an industrial Goliath and won. Now, as she champions a new case with a depressingly similar plot, it is clear that she has lost none of her fighting spirit or trademark candour. "Stand up to BP and say, 'You know what, I'm not taking your shit any more'," she tells an audience of more than 300 anxious individuals in Pensacola, Florida, who have gathered to hear how they can seek legal redress for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
