Feds want more data on possible tube wear at ailing California nuclear power plant 26 Dec 2012 Federal regulators Wednesday pressed the operator of the San Onofre nuclear power plant for more analysis on its damaged steam generators, as the government considers when, or if, one of the seaside reactors can be restarted safely. San Onofre, located between Los Angeles and San Diego, hasn't produced electricity since January, after a tiny radiation leak led to the discovery of excessive wear on hundreds of generator tubes that carry radioactive water.

Maybe not so tiny...

I live 25 miles from San Onofre, and last year circumstances put me in frequent close contact with various organizers within the "San Clemente Green" number of protesters and organizers that are trying to keep the power plants shut down.  The word I had from several of them is that the leak was not so tiny.  I would rather not elaborate on some of the more troubling gossip I heard about the reactor, since I don't have enough access to the evidence other than what I've researched through public portals, but there is a long history there of double-talk that would suggest, as the organizers suggest, that those reactors are "bad actors" and really need to be shut down for good.  Given the risks of what could happen there, and their uncanny nearness to seismic fault lines, you would have to think that any sane and rational oversight through government would conclude the same.  The fact that there is still even a debate, or any debate about nuclear reactors in general, suggests strongly that sanity has fallen off the map in these discussions.  There was a lot of ranting that we would run short on power if they weren't restarted quickly, and SURPRISE, no such thing happened. This is probably the biggest scandal in Southern California, and quite arguably the biggest threat to safety and well-being here.  And most people of good faith, if not all, are hoping that those radiating boondoggles are taken off the grid for good and all.
